MAY 2016 - analysis
State of fact / ADDITION MADE
The remodeling intervention of the external areas facing the Littoria tower represents the closure of a circle in the broader program that involved the entire Sant’Emanuele city block, owned by the Reale Immobili company (Reale Mutua Group). The renovation and enhancement of the architectural complex carried out by the client culminates with the redevelopment of the public space in front of the new entrance to the Littoria tower.
The area below the Littoria Tower presented several problems that prevented its development:
– the volume of the newsstand too intrusive and badly positioned;
– the precarious volume that actually occupied the little square;
– access to the underground car park with its safety railings;
– the presence of visual barriers and diversified obstacles (the phone booth, the signs, the road signs, some exposed systems).

State of fact / STEP 1 and 2 INTERVENTIONS
Step 1 / NEWSSTAND SHIFT
The project proposal involved moving the newsstand from the corner between via Viotti and via Pietro Micca, on the front of piazza Castello. The newsstand was built according to the provisions of the Municipality of Turin, both in terms of form and finish and colors. Different locations were screened before reaching final positioning.
The new kiosk, agreed with the Superintendency, is the most appropriate with respect to the relationship with the façade since it is positioned in a central position between the two arches and in adherence to the already existing railing of the access stairway to the underground car parks, thus minimizing the impact on the facade.
Great importance has been the constant dialogue between the Client and the entities involved in this process which has undergone a complex authorization process. Below is an excerpt.

Step 2 / DEMOLITION PRECARIOUS VOLUME
The displacement of the kiosk and the demolition of the precarious volume (made in the sixties) in front of the Via Viotti façade, allows the facades to be restored to their original architectural form and at the same time to create a wider public passage space.
The first proposals have investigated a possible recovery through the reshaping of the precarious volume in order to make it an architectural object that could dialogue with the context. In a second phase, the proposal then matured with the decision to demolish the volume, following comparisons with the bodies, and to give the right value to such a long-hidden corner.

Step 3 / PUBLIC SPACE REQUALIFICATION
The demolition of the precarious volume, the newly relocated entrance to the tower, the reorganization of the functions in a more orderly manner, the creation of green platforms with seats and the circular sign on the ground, define the new “rediscovered square” in front of the Littoria Tower.
JULY 2019-completion of work
The creation of four flowerbox / seats, two of them generated by the intersection of virtual circles, transforms what is currently a space of passage into a place accessible to everyone, also thanks to the presence of greenery. Great attention has been given to the loges path for the visually impaired and the blind through collaboration with the UICI association, characterized by ceramic stoneware tiles with a yellow chromatic finish.
All these new interventions have contributed to guaranteeing an improvement in safety thanks to the positioning of the benches that delimit the viability function and an increase in the pleasantness and enjoyment of the area, as well as the accessibility and rationalization of the space.
